Women’s Team Training Spring 2010

This past weekend held a special treat for the women of Team Lloyd Irvin…Team Training! Over 30 women gathered at Crazy 88 in Elkridge for a special training session lead by TLI Brown Belt Nyjah Easton. The women enjoyed over 3 hours of drilling, guard passing drills, and live rolling. This was particularly helpful for the ladies at Ivey League because having so many different sized women, women of different levels of skill and experience, and varying ages provided the best training in the world of BJJ. Be careful against these women, they now have some new submissions and sweeps in their back pockets!

In March of this year, Team Lloyd Irvin won the Pan Ams Women’s Division, making TLI the number 1 team for women’s training. This is an outstanding honor and true testament to the elite opportunities women have training with our team. Ms Easton herself placed 2nd at the event, and recently started her own training program in Capital Hill in addition to her training at the Camp Springs TLI location. Congratulations to all the TLI women and great appreciation goes out to Nyjah Easton for teaching at the Women’s Team Training event.

Kids Party Late into the Night at the First Ivey League Pizza Bash!

This past Friday, Ivey League hosted its first Pizza Bash for the kids and their invited guests. The children arrived with plenty of energy, and started off the evening with their favorite game… dodgeball! Several sets of adults were needed to sub into the game because the kids showed no signs of tiring for a solid hour. This gave Ms. Teresa the time she needed to order and pick up all the pizza we needed to feed those hungry mouths. Between the kids, the chaperons, the professional video-gamers, the pizza disappeared in a flash.

The remainder of the evening was divided with groups of children picking their favorite things to do. The young ones were enamored by the video game room, in which a few Ivey League students set up a professional video gaming station with 6 tvs, 6 gaming stations, and unlimited games to play. Karl Jr. watched movies throughout the night in between assisting Mr. Danny with executive tasks. The “big girl crew” played extreme dodgeball and a sophisticated keep away, with of course little Connor intervening whenever necessary.

At the end of the evening, the children begged to keep playing when their parents returned to pick them up. We really enjoyed having them party with us, getting to know their friends and siblings, and spending quality time with all of our volunteers. We look forward to the next bash, and will keep you posted on the next opportunity for you to party with us!

A big thank you goes out to volunteers Coach Charles, Coach Nick W., Brandon, Griffin, Eric and family, Mr. Murphy, Mr. Milligan, and the professional video gamers: Giant Big Nick, Giant Big Nick’s lovely girlfriend, and Bryant.

Parents: If you are interested in having a video game party for your child, please speak with Giant Big Nick or Bryant about their company, AllAboutGamez.Com. They will certainly host an unforgettable gaming party for your child, just ask any of the kids who were there!

2nd Year Benchmark Party a Success!

Downtown Annapolis provided a wonderful atmosphere for a lively and memorable Ivey League event on Saturday, our 2nd Year Anniversary! Current students, friends and family, and a few Crazy 88’ers and Camp Springs instructors came together for our annual potluck party. In an inspiring speech, Coach Danny discussed all the accomplishments and changes we have experienced as a team over the past year and noted that this year was special for several reasons. We moved into our own building, we started our Kids Program, and our family has grown tremendously. Coach Danny thanked the students and supporting people who have all made it possible. He then talked about the potential for our future and his high hopes for us all.

Several special recognitions were made this year. Coach Danny personally thanked all the staff and instructors that have contributed to the high quality of teaching at Ivey League. Next, outstanding students received awards for their hard work, including Egypt Kosloski, Jayna Fenton, Cameron Jurkowsky, Eric Davis, and Nick Walters. “Giant Big Nick” won the $1,000 cash referral prize. We wrapped up the evening with singing Happy Birthday to Coach Danny and enjoying an impressive, three-tiered cake handmade by Mrs. Christine Concepcion. The students surprised Coach Danny with a group gift of a flat screen TV and DVD player so he can watch his giant collection of training and competitions DVDs!

We would like to thank all those who helped make the evening possible and we hope you all join us again for year number 3!

Vinnie Facciponti wins state title in wrestling!

We would like to give a shout out to young Vinnie Facciponti, who won the 7-8 year olds state title in Wrestling a few weeks back. Vinnie is the son of one of our star students, Lou Facciponti. We’re sure proud of Vinnie and we know his Dad is too!

Jim Kelly Makes Wrestlers of Us All!

Saturday’s takedown workshop was a great success with Jim Kelly giving a special workshop on takedowns for wrestling, grappling, and MMA. With many new students in the room to the world of wrestling, Mr. Kelly began with a series of solo drills for us to incorporate into our daily training routines. We all were instantly aware of the benefits of lunges and squats when cross training! After a great warmup, we partnered up to learn how to control our opponent at different stages of a takedown. We focused first on the double leg then later on the sweep single leg. We learned solo and partner drills to solidify our positions and condition our bodies to have perfect muscle memory. We practiced throughout the workshop how to best change our level in any situation. After two and a half hours of thorough instruction and practice, the team was exhausted but enlightened! Thank you to all who attended the seminar and gave their 110% in training and of course to Mr. Kelly who made us much better martial artists.

Classes have returned to normal!

The snow will not keep us in any longer!

Classes are on normal schedule, we hope to see everyone in the training room! This includes kids and adults, and we are not breaking for today’s holiday.

Thursday Night Open Mat

For all those who need to get out of our snow covered houses, we are holding open mat tonight, Thursday Feb 11, from 6 to 8pm. Open mat allows students to come in and work on grappling, wrestling, hitting the heavy bags or whatever they would like without any formal instruction. Classes will not be held but this is an excellent opportunity to work individually or with a partner on any area of your game. All enrolled students of Team Lloyd Irvin are permitted to attend.
